On the tracks of pilgrims and sumpters

Dear guests, we welcome you at the Schönbielhut.

The hut is the starting point for beautiful alpine tours since 1875. Haute Route, Haute Route Impériale and Tour du Ciel are the names of some of the possible interesting multi-day mountain tours. In the case of the Tour du Ciel you cross the ridge between Mattertal and Val d’Hérens passing over Mont Durand, Cabane de Traquit, Bishorn, Topalihut all the way to St. Niklaus.

In the summer other climbs and tours can be undertaken starting in our hut. One example is the Zmutt ridge of the Matterhorn which can be climbed from our hut. Similar ambitious climbs are the Dent d’Hérens, Dent Blanche or the Obergabelhorn. Other easier, but not less beautiful tours include the Pointe de Zinal, Äbihorn or Tête Blanche, which can be reached from our hut.

Hiking destination – for the whole family

Visit us in the Summer on an unforgettable hike along the north face of the Matterhorn. Enjoy your lunch on our sunny terrace or spent a night in our hut. The Schönbielhut is located on a hill at the end of the calm Zmutt valley. The approach to the hut is relatively easy and can be done with children.

You reach the hut

in the Summer by foot in 2.5 hours from Schwarzsee or from Zermatt in 4 hours.

in the Winter, with ski touring equipment and competent guidance, by traversing the Zmutt glacier.

Information for the overnight stay

  • Prices for the overnight stay include half board.
  • A 3 course dinner is served in the evening.
  • Vegetarian or vegan diets, allergies or other dietary restrictions must be announced 24h in advance.
  • The respective sleeping places are exclusively in dormitories. The hut does not offer any rooms.
  • The toilet is located outside the hut.
  • There is a washing facility in the summer, however no shower.
  • There is no possibility to cook yourself while the hut is open.
  • Take your own trash with you when you leave.

NO SHOW TAX without ANNULATION

According to the hut regulations of the SAC, the host has the right to charge a “no-show” fee for individuals and groups, who don’t cancel their reservations at least 24h in advance (Groups of 13+ people 48h). The reference time is 6 pm and the amount is CHF 55.00 per person.

  • The hut is open in the winter from end of March until the beginning of May.
  • In the summer it is open from end of June until the middle of September .
  • Depending on weather and nature conditions, the opening times are subject to vary.
  • In case of emergency during off-season, a shelter room remains open
